STATISTIC SPSS Lab
Criminal Justice Statistics: Lab 3
CRJS-3020-01 | Points: 30
Assignment Objectives
To assess your knowledge of concepts covered in the class text and lectures, as well as your practical knowledge using SPSS. Make sure that this document is professional, i.e. graphs/charts are presentable and embedded properly, results are reported accurately, no output tables are copy and pasted.
Course Materials Covered
One-Sample T-test, Independent Samples T-test, Chi-Square, ANOVA
Questions
- (5 points). You want to determine whether there is a significant difference in a respondent’s fear of crime in their neighborhood (FEAR_CRIME_SCALE) based on the respondent’s gender identity (GENDER_IDENTITY). Based on the levels of measurement for each variable, determine which statistical test is appropriate for testing the relationship and provide the following information.
- Visualize each variable as a graph/chart using best practices. Insert the graph/chart into this document.
- State your hypotheses.
- Check that your dependent variable is normally distributed and explain why it is, or is not, normally distributed.
- Run the appropriate test, and report the correct results (do not copy and paste results).
- Finally, interpret your results. What is your explanation for the results you found?
- (5 points). You want to determine whether there is a significant difference in perceptions of police legitimacy in their community (POLICE_LEGITIMACY_SCALE) between a known population and those in the data who identify as Latinx (Y7_1030). To do this, you must filter your data for this question so you are only looking at respondents who have identified as Latinx. You know that the average score on the police legitimacy scale for the population is 59.65.
You want to determine whether there is a significant difference in a respondent’s perception of social disorganization in their neighborhood (SOCIAL_DISORGANIZATION_SCALE) based on their household income categorized as less than $100,000, $100,000 to $199,999, and $200,000 or more (Hint: you will need to recode).
You want to determine whether there is a significant difference in a respondent’s perception of police legitimacy in their neighborhood (POLICE_LEGITIMACY_SCALE) across race categories (RACE).
- Run the appropriate test, and report the correct results.
- Finally, interpret your results. What is your explanation for the results you found?
- (5 points). You want to determine whether there is a significant difference in a respondent’s fear of crime in their neighborhood (FEAR_CRIME_SCALE) based on whether they fall into one of two groups; (1) those who are married or in a domestic partnership and (2) those who or not (Hint: you will need to recode).
- Run the appropriate test, and report the correct results.
- Finally, interpret your results. What is your explanation for the results you found?
- (5 points). You want to determine whether there is a significant relationship between a respondent’s educational attainment (EDUCATION), recoded into two categories (less than a graduate degree or a graduate degree), and their income, using the new income variable you recoded for question that has three categories. Based on the levels of measurement for each variable, determine which statistical test is appropriate for testing the relationship and provide the following information.
- Visualize each variable as a graph/chart using best practices. Insert the graph/chart into this document.
- State your hypotheses.
- Run the appropriate test, and report the correct results.
- Finally, interpret your results. What is your explanation for the results you found?
IMPORTANT: Make sure you submit your output and data files along with this document.
